I write this article to share a journey that has profoundly changed my understanding of myself. Growing up in an abusive household, my father's insistence that I "think on my feet" and my mother's cold reassurance that I would "always land on my feet," regardless of their treatment, shaped my early life. Their gaslighting and abuse forced me into a survival mode where my intellect became my sole refuge. My quick thinking often saved my life, but at a great cost: dissociation and amnesia became my constant companions, disconnecting me from my emotions and body for over 50 years.
